Online Casinos in Canada: A Province-by-Province Guide
Rivers Rock Canada desk · Aug 7, 2026
There is no such thing as "legal in Canada" for online casinos — only legal in your province. Canada's Criminal Code lets each province conduct and manage gambling inside its borders, so the online map is provincial by design.
The two models
- Provincial platform model (most provinces): the province's Crown corporation operates the legal online casino. In British Columbia that is PlayNow (BCLC). Other provinces operate their own platforms or share one — several provinces also offer PlayNow-based or equivalent Crown services, and Québec runs its own through Loto-Québec.
- Open licensed market (Ontario): since April 2022, Ontario operates a regulated open market — private operators may serve Ontario players if licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and contracted with iGaming Ontario. Dozens of branded casinos operate legally there — and only there.
What that means in practice
- A BC player's regulated option is PlayNow. An Ontario-licensed casino advertising nationally is still only authorized for players physically in Ontario.
- Geolocation is enforced: regulated platforms verify you are inside the province at play time.
- Offshore sites that accept Canadians from anywhere sit outside this system: no provincial regulator stands behind your balance, your data or your dispute.
How to use this knowledge
- Find your province's platform via its Crown corporation or regulator — not via ads.
- In Ontario, verify an operator's licence before depositing: see How to Verify an Online Casino Licence in Canada.
- Wherever you play, the province's platform is where player-protection tools are strongest: limits, self-exclusion and identity verification are built in, not bolted on.
